Mountain Province mayoralty bet, 4 others nabbed in drug sting

SANTIAGO CITY: A 36-year-old former police officer and now mayoralty candidate had been arrested for illegal possession of drugs following a police operation in the Mountain province, the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) in Cordillera said.

Sonny Kidit Kalaw, 36, of Barangay Data, Sabangan in Benguet and his accomplices were found in possession of P2.2-million marijuana bricks worth P2.28 million at Sitio Oowayen, Poblacion village in Sadanga, about three kilometers away from the Ampawilen checkpoint, PDEA Regional Director Gil Castro said in a statement.

Also arrested were Jonathan Abella, 37, a government worker from Barangay Gawana, Barlig; Jeric Sansano, 30, a construction worker, from Bonfal East, Nueva Vizcaya but presently residing in Barangay Fuyayeng, Bontoc; Samson Damaso, 28, a native of Tadian, but presently residing at Barangay Samoki, Bontoc; and a minor.

Kalaw and his companions were brought to the Sadanga police station for documentation and temporary custody while the minor was turned over to the Municipal Social Welfare and Development of Sadanga.

The suspected drug pushers were indicted before the prosecutors’ office on Thursday for violation of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 (RA 9165).
