Magnitude 6 quake jolts Dava Occidental

A magnitude 6 earthquake hit Davao Occidental on Saturday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

The quake at 8:43 a.m. was 297 kilometers southeast of Sarangani province, also in Davao Occidental, Phivolcs chief Renato Solidum Jr. said.

Solidum said the quake, which has a depth of 88 kilometers, was tectonic in origin.

Some eight minutes later, an aftershock with magnitude 5.4 occurred at the same place, the Phivolcs official said.

No damage is expected from the latest tremor since it was offshore and there was no intensity reported as well, he said.

“The earthquake is on the Indonesian side. There was also no tsunami threat,” Solidum said.
